In these days of high material and labour costs, the aquisition of a new pipe organ for many churches in small rural communities can be little more than a 'pipe dream'. However, utilising the remains of a small, near derelict organ, it was possible to design and construct a modest instrument for St Michael & All Angels' Church within a realistic budget. The basis of this instrument is an organ by an unknown London builder dating from c.1876, which we believe may have stood in the Freemasons' hall, Bridlington. The organ was completely re-designed and rebuilt with new pedal chests and action, new winding system and new drawstop action. The pipework, with the exception of the Gamba 8ft, is from the Denman organ formerly in the United Reformed Church, Knaresborough. The pitch-pine case incorporates part of a displaced pew from the church and was constructed by Peter Dale of Ripon. The Warm tone and well-balanced chorus of this organ have contributed greatly to the worship and congregational singing in this small village church. |
